The castle and the Cadre noir
Painted into the manuscripts of the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, Saumur Castle dominates the town with its white silhouette. On the left bank, the National Riding School hosts the Cadre noir, riders in black uniform and dark helmet, whose displays and airs above ground amaze the public. A show to share, then to talk about for a long time afterwards.
Troglodytes and sparkling Loire
The tuffeau stone, the white rock that holds the castle up, has been carved for kilometres to provide cellars and dwellings. The troglodyte caves house mushroom farms and sparkling-wine producers, such as Bouvet-Ladubay in Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent. Candlelit tastings and tours of underground dwellings: a real change of scene a few minutes from the centre.
Saumur-Champigny and Place Saint-Pierre
In the heart of the town, Place Saint-Pierre and its timber-framed houses gather lively terraces and small restaurants. Around it, the Saumur-Champigny vineyards spread their Cabernet Franc across the Loire hillsides. On Lyad, members from Saumur share their favourite spots, from Quai Lucien-Gautier to the nearby villages; it is up to you to find someone to raise a glass with.
